UNYQ FOOT
From 2021 to 2025, Lucía Rodríguez worked in collaboration with the United States government’s Department of Veterans Affairs on the development of the UNYQ FOOT, an innovative approach to the fabrication of customized prosthetic feet.
Using biometric techniques and 3D printing, this prosthetic foot aims to overcome the aesthetic limitations of many traditional prosthetic feet by offering more personalized and visually appealing options for users. It allows users—primarily women—to wear a wider variety of footwear, including different heel heights, thanks to an adjustable design.
The system consists of a lightweight ankle made of aluminum and titanium, connected to an anatomically shaped base designed to adapt to the shoe. The project’s main challenge was developing this base through 3D printing, achieving an extremely lightweight structure—under 250 grams—while maintaining sufficient strength to support a person’s weight and daily movement.
