“Km0” Initiatives for Sustainable Agriculture
Developed at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, this project aims to strengthen the local agricultural system by addressing challenges such as dependence on imports and the environmental impact of certain farming practices, promoting more sustainable and responsible consumption.

The project introduces key tools to connect producers with consumers. A distinctive label identifies local products according to three levels of sustainability (high, medium, and low), based on the origin of their ingredients and production processes. Seasonal calendars have been designed to link local products with traditional festivities, integrating farmers into the island’s social and cultural life. The system also includes explanatory infographics that educate the public about the importance of local products and how to support sustainable production.
To help consumers understand the environmental and social impact of their purchases, the label is divided into three categories: High, meaning fully local production, where all ingredients come from Gran Canaria; Medium, where the majority of ingredients are local and external inputs are only allowed when no local alternatives exist; and Low, where production is local but includes external inputs even when local alternatives are available.
