HEARO
HEARO is an application designed for smartphones and smartwatches that acts as a “smart ear,” connecting families and pets while detecting potential dangers through different alert levels. Developed by Seonju Byeon, Kim Min-kyu, Kim Chang-rip, and Lee Chang-hoon from Jeju National University, the project was awarded at the 2025 Korea Engineering Festival.

For people with hearing disabilities, noisy environments or emergency situations can pose serious risks, as auditory alerts often go unnoticed or become confusing. David Miller, an automotive engineer with hearing loss, represents the ideal user for HEARO: someone seeking greater safety and a smoother connection with his surroundings and family life.
Among its main features, the app detects environmental sounds and classifies them by risk level, such as safety, warning, or danger. It also incorporates an innovative function that facilitates communication with pets and family members, reinforcing autonomy, security, and everyday interaction.
