Design of a Walker for Young People with Cerebral Palsy

Design of a Walker for Young People with Cerebral Palsy

In an increasingly adaptive world, assistive devices are key tools for inclusion. However, young people require products specifically designed to meet their needs and daily routines. Boryana Stoyanova, from Universitat Jaume I, has developed an innovative walker aimed at users between the ages of 12 and 18.

This walker combines multiple functions into a single design to provide the best possible user experience. The handles and their support bars are adjustable, allowing the angle of hand support to be modified. The overall height is adjustable between 64.6 cm and 86.9 cm, and the device incorporates fabric components for both the seat and the backrest. The backrest can be reclined in three positions (90°, 95°, or 100°) to ensure maximum comfort. It also includes a dedicated platform for carrying personal belongings, such as a backpack, along with a mesh system to secure them. As a safety measure, the platform automatically lowers if the load exceeds 2 kg.

The walker has been designed with ease of handling in mind for both the user and their caregivers. It can be folded in both height and width to facilitate transport and storage. Once folded, it can be carried using a telescopic bar located near the handle, allowing the front wheels to remain in contact with the ground while being pulled. To strengthen the emotional connection between the user and the product, each young person can personalize the walker according to their individual preferences.

This project not only provides a physical solution, but also aims to enhance young people’s quality of life and confidence, allowing them to navigate their environment with greater freedom and style.
